Martin Margiela was born in Belgium in 1957, graduating from Antwerp’s Royal Academy of Fine Arts in 1980. He founded Maison Martin Margiela in 1988 showing his first women’s ready to wear collection for spring / summer 1989. His work is closely associated with the deconstructionist fashion movement of the 1980s. Martin Margiela’s work is characterised by a poetic appreciation of imperfection, personality and eccentricity. His Margiela collections have been presented on tube platforms and street corners.
