Lola Marsh est une exquise sensation musicale. La voix de la (très) jolie Yael Shoshana Cohen, l’une des plus belles et magnétiques du moment est sublimée par les arrangements du multi-instrumentiste Gil Landau. Leur pop folk orchestrale aux accents cinématographiques fait mouche et rallie de plus en plus d’adeptes partout dans le monde. Alors que le groupe est en tournée, Yael et Gil ont accepté de répondre à nos questions.
JetSociety : Pouvez-vous nous raconter une anecdote (bonne ou drôle) de tournée ?
Yael – Lola Marsh : Il y a beaucoup de moments drôles et funs en tournée. C’est délicat d’en choisir un en particulier, et encore plus difficile de parler, parce que vous devez être là pour le vivre.. Hmmm .. Un très bon moment que j’ai eu, s’est passé lorsque je me suis rendue compte que Frida de ABBA (ndlr : Anni-Frid Synni « Frida » Lyngstad, désormais Son Altesse Sérénissime la Princesse Anni-Frid Reuss, Comtesse de Plauen), assistait à l’un de nos spectacles en Suisse. Elle m’a écrit une petite note à la fin du concert, et nous avons bavardé un peu. C’était vraiment génial pour moi de rencontrer cette femme puissante et inspirante… et je suis la fille la plus heureuse du monde depuis ce jour-là !
JetSociety : A partir du mois de mai, vous serez aux Etats-Unis, à New-York et Boston notamment, avez-vous l’impression de ramener votre amour de la folk sur sa terre natale ?
Lola Marsh : Haha, eh bien, ça a bien marché avec les groupes anglais, il n’y a aucune raison pour que ce ne soit pas la même chose avec nous !
JetSociety : Vous avez collaboré à la BO du film Criminal avec le titre Drift And Fall Again, est-ce un nouveau chemin que vous avez envie d’emprunter, écrire pour le cinéma ?
Lola Marsh : Ce fut une expérience très intéressante et amusante. Il y a une certaine liberté à écrire en dehors du cadre du groupe. On adorerait continuer dans cette voie, d’ailleurs ça serait presque dans l’ordre des choses car nous envisageons nos chansons comme des scènes imaginaires ou en capturant l’instant présent, sans compter le plaisir de collaborer avec des gens talentueux comme Brian (Tyler) et Keith (Power).
JetSociety : Lola Marsh a été annoncé comme la révélation de l’année 2016, est-ce un poids à supporter ou au contraire une motivation ?
C’est toujours génial d’entendre que les gens nous aiment ainsi que notre musique. Les bonnes critiques donnent un surcroit de motivation, mais ça ne change pas notre façon de travailler. On ne sait jamais ce qui va arriver lorsqu’on sort une chanson, alors on laisse de côté les doutes et on profite au maximum. Cela dit on est très fort en auto critique ! Pour répondre à votre question, on ne se sent pas accablés par ce poids, il y aura toujours de bonnes et de mauvaises critiques. C’est ce qui est fabuleux avec l’art. Ce n’est pas une science exacte et personne n’a de formule magique. Notre motivation vient de l’envie d’écrire de bonnes chansons. On essaie de rester concentrés là dessus et de travailler chaque jour de notre mieux.
JetSociety : Votre album est très attendu, pouvez-vous nous en dire plus ?
Lola Marsh Et bien, ça va être notre premier LP et nous sommes vraiment très impatients. Les chansons murissent avec le groupe depuis ces dernières années et nous essayons de nous laisser guider à travers elles.
JetSociety : Vous êtes vraiment dans votre élément sur scène, mais préférez-vous la scène ou le studio ?
Yael – Lola Marsh : Pour ma part, la foule me donne de l’énergie et ça rejaillit sur ma performance vocale, l’adrénaline me booste et je me concentre d’autant plus sur scène. En studio je dois faire appel à mon imagination et parfois j’en viens à apporter des affaires de chez moi pour me sentir plus confortable. Une chose vraiment cool en studio c’est ce sentiment de de pouvoir faire ce que tu veux et laisser libre court à tes idées mêmes les plus folles. Je peux chuchoter et ça sonnera toujours plus fort qu’en réalité.
JetSociety : J’ai vu ce commentaire sur youtube à la suite de la chanson You’re Mine : Ce matin à la radio, la journée dans ma tête et finalement dans ma playlist. Est-ce votre raison d’être toucher les coeurs ?
Oui bien sûr, lorsqu’on écrit une chanson la première chose que l’on fait c’est de la tester l’un sur l’autre, pour être sûrs que la mélodie ou les paroles nous touchent. Nous sommes deux créatures sensibles et c’est important pour nous de faire chavirer le public et d’écrire des chansons qui restent avec leurs auditeurs.
JetSociety : Nous allons voir si vous êtes en symbiose : Yael que préférez-vous chez Gil et Gil que préférez-vous chez Yael ?
Yael – Lola Marsh : Gil est la personne la plus talentueuse que je n’ai jamais rencontrée. A chaque fois qu’il touche un instrument, les plus belles mélodies prennent vie.
Gil – Lola Marsh : Yaeli à une extraordinaire capacité à rendre les gens souriants et heureux
JetSociety : Avez-vous l’un et l’autre un titre, un film ou un livre fétiche au point de ne jamais vous en séparer ?
Yael – Lola Marsh : L’histoire sans fin ! J’ai grandi avec ce livre qui est pour moi une vraie source de lumière dans les mauvais moments même à l’âge adulte 🙂
Gil- Lola Marsh : Retour vers le Futur, les 3 je suis complètement fan de ces films !

JetSociety : You are almost at the middle of your world tour, how are you feeling ?
Lola Marsh : The feeling is amazing. There is always an element of something « unexpected », you get to places you’ve never been before, and meet new people everyday. I always find it exciting when people sing lyrics from our songs at our shows..it’s still overwhelming for me. We always look forward to the next tour, It gives us an opportunity just to get away from the daily life, even though it is really hard work sometimes. There are very long drives, and sometimes you barely get any sleep before a show. It can get a little edgy, but adrenaline helps us pull through. And we love it.
JetSociety : Can you tell us a good or funny tour story ?
Yael – Lola Marsh : There’s A LOT of funny and good moments on tour, it’s hard to pick one, and even harder to tell about one, cause you have to be there.. Hmmm.. A very good moment that I had was when I’ve realized that Frida from ABBA, was at a show we gave in Switzerland. She wrote me a little note at the end of the show, and we chatted a bit, it was really inspiring for me to meet this powerful woman, and I was the happiest girl alive that day.
JetSociety : From May, you’ll be in the united states, N.Y and Boston, do you have the feeling to bring back folk to its homeland ?
Lola Marsh : Haha, well, it work the the whole british invasion bands and blues a while back, no reason for it not to work with our music.
JetSociety : You collaborated on the Criminal soundtrack with Drift And Fall Again, is this a new path that you want to take, writing for the cinema?
Lola Marsh : It was a very interesting and fun experience for us. There is a certain amount of freedom that comes with writing music that is outside of the band’s setting. We would definitely love to do more stuff like that. It felt pretty natural for us, because when we write songs, a lot of the time we envision some sort of imaginary scene or try to capture a moment in time. It was also a lot of fun collaborating with talented people like Brian (Tyler) and Keith (Power).
JetSociety : You have been announced as the revelation of 2016, is it a weight to bear, or rather a motivation ?
Lola Marsh : It’s always very exciting to hear that people liked us, and our music. Good reviews definitely give you a boost of motivation. It doesn’t really change stuff for us on the day to day of working. We have no control of what happens to a song once it’s released into the world, so we really try to let go of all the expectations and try to enjoy the process. It’s not such an easy thing to do, and we ourselves have a high degree of self criticism, but to answer your question, we don’t feel burdened by that. There will always be good and bad opinions about what you do. I guess that’s the great thing about art. It’s not an exact science, and we don’t try to formulate it into one. Our motivation to write good songs comes first and foremost from our natural desire to create and to be excited about it. We just try to stay focused and work it every day.
JetSociety : Your album is highly anticipated, can you tell us more ?
Lola Marsh : Well, It’s going to be our first full length release, and we’re really looking forward to it. The album is diverse and dynamic. The songs in it transformed with us as a band through the last few years, and we tried to let the songs and the story guide us through it.
JetSociety : You are really in your element on stage , but do you prefer the stage or the studio ?
Lola Marsh : I can totally say about myself, that something about the energy of a crowd, gives me powers and reflects on my performance, the adrenalin works on me like a charm, and I feel much more centered on stage. In the studio I always need to use my imagination, sometimes I bring stuff from my apartment to make me feel more comfortable and less sterilized.
A really good thing about recording in the studio is that you have this feeling that u can do whatever u wanna do, and fulfill all of your crazy ideas. I can whisper, and still can sound larger than life.

JetSociety : I saw this comment on youtube after the song You’re Mine : This morning on the radio, the whole day in my head and finally on my playlist… Is it your purpose to touch the hearts ?
Lola Marsh : Of course. When we write a song, the first thing is to test it on each other and to check if the melody or lyrics touched us. We are both sensitive creatures and its important to us to move people, and to write a song that will stay with our listeners.
JetSociety : We’ll see if you are in symbiosis : Yael what is Gil best quality ? Gil what is Yael best quality ?
Yael : Gil is the most talented creature that I’ve ever met. Really. Always when his playing an instrument, the most beautiful melodies are coming to life.
Gil : Yaeli has special energy that makes people smile and happy.
JetSociety : Do you both have a song, a movie or a favorite book to the point of never to part with ?
Yael : « The NeverEnding Story ». I grew on this book, and it has been a great light for me in dark times, even as a grownup 🙂
Gil : « back to the future » all three of them. I just love these movie
